Chiropractic Techniques
Chiropractic has a long history of treating conditions such as headaches, back pain, neck pain, and more. The practice was founded in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa by Daniel David Palmer. Since then, more than 150 chiropractic techniques have been developed to help patients achieve a better quality of life. Before we look at some of the most prominent techniques, we should first consider why you would seek the help of a chiropractor.
How do you know you need to see a Chiropractor?
There are certain tell-tale signs that you might want to consider consulting a chiropractor. These include things like chronic headaches, difficulty with range of motion of your arms, legs, neck or other extremities, lower back pain, injuries due to a car accident (especially whiplash), you sit at a desk for prolonged periods of time, or if you find that the tread at the bottoms of your shoes wear off unequally. Even if you’re active and fit, visiting a chiropractor once a month is great to ensure everything is in alignment and as it should be. This will help rid your body of unnoticed tension, thereby lessening your chance of injury.
Is Chiropractic Care covered by medical insurance?
To visit a chiropractor in Amsterdam for the first time, you can expect to pay between €80 to €90. Subsequent visits range of between €50 and €60 per 10 to 20 minute session. The great news is that some, depending on your plan, these fees are usually covered in part of in full, by your Dutch health insurance.
Different types of Chiropractic Techniques
Expert in different Chiropractic Techniques
There are more than 150 chiropractic techniques, and nearly 200 if you consider some overlapping techniques. The immense variety of techniques mean that chiropractic treatments can be truly tailored to the unique body type and needs of a particular patient. Here’s a look at the six most frequently used treatments on the chiropractic techniques list, according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA).
Diversified technique
According to the ACA, the diversified technique is the most frequently used technique among chiropractors. Aimed at achieving proper alignment and movement of the spine, technique has the patient lying on their stomach and uses precise, hands-on pressure to adjust the spine and extremities.
Extremity manipulation
The diversified technique and extremity manipulation are by far the most widely used chiropractic techniques. Extremity manipulation involves adjusting non-spinal column parts of the body, including hands, feet, shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, ankles, toes, hips and ribs.
Activator technique
A very gentle chiropractic technique, the activator is a handheld instrument that sends light impulses into the extremities or spine. It is used to treat a number of things, including lower back pain and migraines.
Gonstead technique
Another hands-on technique, the Gonstead technique is very similar to the diversified technique, with the main difference that the patient lies on their side instead of their stomach. It involves the same type of precise pressure manipulation, and aims to realign joints, increase mobility, and reduce pain and stiffness.
Cox technique
Also known as decompression manipulation or flexion distraction, it is another gentle chiropractic technique that is performed on a purpose-designed adjustment table. The aim of the technique is to treat among other things, disc herniations, scoliosis, and facet joint pain.
Thompson technique
The Thompson technique is used by more than half of all chiropractors, according to the ACA. Used to treat the spine and extremities, it also uses a special table that has pads that drop slightly whenever the chiropractor makes an adjustment.
How to choose a good Chiropractor in the Netherlands?
Since your physical health is extremely important, so is choosing a good chiropractor. Here are a couple of ways to help you select the best chiropractor for you.
Get referrals
Word-of-mouth is a great way to find a good chiropractor, since these are based on real experiences. However, everyone’s body and interaction with people is different, so your experience might be completely different.
Check the chiropractor’s credentials
In order to qualify and practice, a chiropractor needs at least a bachelor’s degree in sciences or related field, and a significant number of on-the-job hours. Ask about their credentials. If they seem to avoid the subject or don’t have the proper qualifications, steer well clear.
Visit their website
Get a ‘feel’ for the chiropractor by visiting their website. What is their philosophy and patient care commitments. Does the website look professional — these days there is no excuse not to have a professional-looking site. If they neglect this detail, what other details will they potentially neglect?
How do they communicate?
Communication is key. Is communication prompt and professional? Do they make you feel like ‘just another patient’, are their responses generic, or are they warm and make you feel like you matter to them?
